The ancient Greeks had four words for love - philia (friendship), storge (familial love), eros (sexual love), and agape (unconditional or sacrificial love) - and what is remarkable about the relationship between Jim, Judy, and Plato, what ultimately makes their love so powerful, is that it does not fall neatly into just one of the categories, but encompasses all four. They are friends; they create a surrogate family; they have an erotic connection. Then, in the film’s climax, the bonds they form at the mansion lead Jim and Judy to risk their lives trying to save Plato, a boy they had just met that morning.
